How to get a Gumasta License in Mumbai (2026)
Every shop, office and commercial establishment operating in Mumbai needs a Gumasta License — formally called the Shop & Establishment Registration — under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act. It's usually the very first compliance step for a new business, and without it, you can't legally open your doors, open a current bank account, or apply for most other licenses.
Who needs one?
Any shop, office, hotel, restaurant, godown or commercial establishment employing one or more people needs to register within 30 days of starting operations — including small retail shops and home-based businesses with a commercial address.
Documents you'll need
- PAN card and Aadhaar of the proprietor/partners
- Passport-size photograph
- Proof of the business address (rent agreement or ownership document)
- NOC from the property owner, if rented
- List of employees, if any
Timeline & fees
Government fees depend on the number of employees and typically range from ₹1,000–5,000. Processing usually takes 7–10 working days once the application and documents are submitted correctly — most rejections happen because of incomplete address proof, which we double-check before filing.
How The Localise helps
We handle the entire filing for you — document verification, form submission and follow-up with the municipal office — so you don't need to visit any government office. Most clients complete the entire process over WhatsApp.
